Hurley, the Official Plantation Dog, now has his own Facebook!

Hurley is our nine year old Golden Retriever who is “On Staff” as our official greeter and all around best friend.

He spends most of his time between homes in Chesapeake with our son, Tyler, his very best friend and our bed and breakfast in King George, Virginia called Belle Grove Plantation. Belle Grove Plantation is the birthplace of James Madison that sits on a 694 acre plantation overlooking the Rappahannock River. The Southern Mansion was built in 1791 and offers suites and a ton of history. Hurley enjoys his visits to Belle Grove Plantation and comes on special occasions and on special requests.

Hurley Update

Nov. 3rd 2013

We just wanted to give you a quick update on Hurley, our Official Plantation Dog.

IMG_4968

As you may have read, Hurley had a tooth that had abscessed. It had backed up into his eye and caused it to swell.

We are happy to report, after getting him on some good antibiotics, he is doing much better!

Hurley asked us to pass on all his gratitude for all the prayers and well wishes. He is so excited to be getting better and looks forward to making a Special Appearance at the plantation this Thanksgiving! He hopes to see everyone there!

Poor Hurley

Oct. 29th 2013

Hurley our Golden Retriever and Official Plantation Dog isn't feeling well. This is an update on him through Belle Grove Plantation Bed ad Breakfast of Port Conway and King George, Virginia

Since I have moved the Belle Grove Plantation, I don’t get to see Hurley, our golden retriever as much as I would like. As some of our older followers know, Hurley is a member of our plantation staff (we call him the “Official Plantation Dog”) and has been here many times.

Hurley started out as our son, Tyler’s dog so he is really attached to Tyler. Hurley is really a guy’s dog. He loves both Tyler and Brett and loves to be with them. When I brought him here in July for a week, it was really kind of sad. Hurley enjoyed being with me, but you could really tell he missed being at home with the boys. So with great sadness, I sent him back. I really do miss that dog!

So I now get to keep up with him through pictures and the occasional visit back to Chesapeake. Brett even puts him on the phone so he can pant in the receiver. Brett says Hurley smiles and pants when I talk to him on the speaker phone.

Yesterday, I got the news that Hurley wasn’t feeling too good. Tyler called Brett to let him know that he had noticed some swelling around one of Hurley’s eyes and the he seemed to be just not feeling good. Hurley is nine years old, but has always acted and looked like a much younger dog. His muzzle has started graying as all golden retrievers do, but he still doesn’t seem that old. He doesn’t get sick that often and even when he does, he still tries to keep up.

Tyler took Hurley to the vet yesterday, worried about the swelling around his eye. Turns out that Hurley has a tooth that has abscessed. The infection has backed up into his tissue around his eye. Brett is really good at watching Hurley’s health and one of the things he checks on all Hurley’s visits are his teeth. Last visit, they looked really good. So this just developed.

The course of action will be antibiotics for ten days. If it gets worse or doesn’t heal, they will have to put him to sleep and remove the tooth. This would be Hurley’s first operation or injury.

Brett sent me updated pictures of Hurley and I have to say he does look like he isn’t feeling all that great. I wish I could give him a big hug!

So we will watch and wait to see if it gets better. When it does, I know that I will be buying him one of his favorite chew bones to enjoy.

Hurley MIA?

Aug. 19th 2013

We have been getting a lot of questions as to “Where in the World is Hurley” our beloved Golden Retriever. Well don’t fret, he is still around. He has been spending his summer back in Chesapeake with our son, Tyler.

RBP-280

I brought him up back in June for a bridal shoot with one of our first brides. But I found during that week long stay he was really out of place and was always looking for our son, his favorite person in the world. So I sent him home to enjoy swimming in the pool and hanging out with Tyler and his friends. I got to see him last night and today when I made a run back to Chesapeake for a meeting.

So don’t worry, he is doing great and will be back up some during the fall and winter months.

The Landscaping, Sidewalk, Hurley and an Incredible Find have arrived!

Jun. 24th 2013

20130622_095039

Saturday morning at 10am, a huge red Kenworth truck pulled into Belle Grove Plantation bearing lots of beautiful new plants! We also had 17 wonderful volunteers who gave of their time and worked hard in the heat to help us unload and plant 1/3 of the plants! We can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciate all our volunteers! We could have never done this alone!

Thank you to the following:

Mr. and Mrs. Hudson

Mr. and Mrs. Moore

King George Board of Supervisors Ruby Brabo and her daughter Clara

Mrs. Veazey and her son Warren

Mrs. Durrette and her daughter Rachel

Mr. and Mrs. Crosson

Mrs. DeGroat from Chesapeake

Mrs. Barnett from Chesapeake

Mrs. Goodall and her friend Alex from Richmond

We had the following plants to arrive:

Blaauw’s Pink Azalea – Delaware Valley White Azalea – Girard’s Renee Michelle  Azalea – Karen Azalea – Milky Way Dogwoods – Old English boxwoods – Golden Mop Cypress – Pink Velour Crepe Myrtles – Monarda Petite Delight – Karl Rosenfeld Peony – Okame Japanese Cherry Trees – Double Red Knockout Roses – Double Pink Knockout Roses – Crown Jewel Gardenia – Leyland Cypress – Twist and Shout Hydrangea – Limelight Hydrangea – Charles Joly Hydrangea – Sunny Yellow Knockout Roses

As we were digging holes, we were finding more artifacts! One find was more than we could have hoped for! Alex found two parts of a white plate and two pieces of green glass. As soon as I saw the green glass I knew it was from an old wine bottle. But you just couldn’t date it because it lacked markings. But the white plate looked really interesting! I held my breath and hoped until today. I ran to Ferry Farm to get it dated! Mara confirmed my wildest dream! It dates from 1740 to 1755! It is now the oldest pieces we have found on Belle Grove! And the date would have been when James Madison’s Grandmother was still here! Can you believe it?! James Madison’s Grandmother, Rebecca Catlett Conway Moore and his mother, Nelly Conway Madison could have held this plate!! It just blows your mind!

While we were hard at work on the landscaping, we had a crew of hard working masons from Betts Masonry working hard on our sidewalks. You know that we have been pulling our brick from the Riverside to move to the front. Well Saturday we started seeing the fruit of our labors! We love this sidewalk! It should be done by Friday if we don’t get delayed by the weather!

And I know we haven’t talked much about Hurley , our Official Plantation dog, because I have been at Belle Grove and he and Brett have been in Chesapeake. Well Hurley has arrived back at Belle Grove Plantation! He has a photo shoot on Tuesday with a soon to be bride.

My Trip to the Plantation

Mar. 16th 2013

Last Sunday, my Mom and Dad needed to go to the plantation to get some measurements for their interior designer.

IMG_5067

After giving them “puppy dog” eyes for several minutes, they finally gave in and took me along!

IMG_5052

I am so happy to be going! I hate being left behind.

IMG_5053

This is my favorite part of going somewhere. The wind in my hair… my ears… my  nose and my eyes!

IMG_5051

Wow it seems to take forever for us to get there! I can’t wait to run around and play!

Dad, are we there yet?

IMG_5060

We finally get here and we end up spending hours walking around measuring windows, doors and walls!

Wow, this is boring….

IMG_5055

FINALLY!

They are done and we can go outside and play!

Decisions, Decisions

Mar. 5th 2013

crazy smiley

Wow, the last few days have been pretty much a blur for us! We had a last minute meeting at the plantation on Sunday and didn’t make it home until close to midnight. But the meeting was good and now we working on scheduling contractors to come in to do last minute minor repairs, painting, system changes, landscaping and furnishing the plantation.

Our goal is to get as much scheduled and done now before the March 19th Public Hearing so we can hit the ground running after that. The Public Hearing meeting on March 19th is the last one to get our final approval for zoning. After that, we can get our business license and get all the other stuff done.

Our Osprey Babies from 2012

Our Osprey Babies from 2012

We have our list going on what needs to be done to get the door open. First, we have to get the Osprey Nest removed from our chimney and moved to a new location. Hopefully we can get this done before they return for the year. The Osprey generally returns around March or April so our time is running out. There is an Osprey nest here in Chesapeake that is located within view of the highway. I have been watching that site for their return. This morning, I saw one of them! I just hope we aren’t too late!

The next thing we need to do is get all the systems checked out in the Mansion. This mansion was restored between 1997 and 2003 and had upgraded systems added. We are completely wired for anything and have a geo-thermal system. But since the restoration, no one has lived in the Mansion. So things didn’t get used.

DSC_0041

We also need to do some painting inside and out. The Mansion has settled some over that last ten years and a few stress cracks have shown up on some of the archways. That is an easy fix. We also will be changing the color of two of the rooms. Outside, we just need to touch up some of the paint and repaint the rails white.

Sunset at Belle Grove

Sunset at Belle Grove

While all this is going, we have to get the contractor to install the new driveway, parking and storm water drainage. We also need to get the bricks out of the ground so we can get the grading on the grounds done. Then we need to install the sidewalks and arrival space with the bricks we pulled. There are also three trees we need to remove. Then there is the landscaping. We need to get our plan down and get the owner to approve it so when you arrive at the plantation, it will be beautiful again.

And while that is going, we have the interior designers working on getting the furnishing we want. Colors, fabrics, chairs, tables, beds, pictures and on and on! We also have to get with a book dealer to get our library stocked!

We also have to get the website finished and photographs done of the plantation for the website.

Whew….

Then there are the decisions….

Do we want this color or that color? Do we like the flowers, trees and shrubs the landscaper has picked out? If not, we do we want? Do we want a gravel driveway or paved gravel or a tar and gravel driveway? Do we want to use brick or pavers for the sidewalk? When we get the trees cut down, what do we want to do with the wood? Where do we want the formal garden to start? What glasses do we want? Can we get the silverware we want to use? Antiques or reproductions?

Whew….

These are the questions that are running through our minds these days.

We need your help!

We are going to ask for your advice every day or so on Facebook.

If you go to our fan page, you can help us pick out some of the things we are going to place in the Mansion!

It’s kind of like you are shopping with us!
