Heading down the road
After a weekend again, Brett and I decided to hang out around the house this weekend. Brett had his list of things he needed to do, one of them was to take Hurley to the vets for his annual check-up. Of course when left to my own devices, I go antique shopping! I decided to head down route 460 between Suffolk and Petersburg. We had traveled down this way when we went to Maymont in Richmond and I had seen several antique stores.
I made my way down 460 and stopped at about five different places. Sadly there wasn’t anything that jumped out at me. There were a few pieces that I would have liked to have, but the price was just a little more than what I wanted to spend. I was starting to think that maybe I wasn’t going to find anything, until I stopped at this antique store in Disputanta, Virginia. As soon as I walked in, I had a good feeling.
The store is called”The Old Country Store Antiques“. As I walked into the store, I was warmth greeted by a gentleman. I asked if he had some good deals for me and I have to say I loved his answer. He told me, “I sure do. You find something and we will make it a good deal. I believe that antique shopping should be fun, not a hassle.” After I looked through the store, I found on tea pot that I wanted to purchase. The price was just a little more than what I wasnted to spend so I ask him to work me a deal on it. He got on the phone with the owner of the booth and got the price just under what I was willing to pay for it! Now that is service! I know that this store is a little ways from our current home, but I know I will be making a few more trips back! I would recommend a stop here if you are in the area! When you stop ask for James or Robyn Slaughter and tell them Michelle sent you!
From there, I stopped at two more places and struck out. I was just short of being in Petersburg and I was just not ready to go home yet. So I decided to head to downtown Petersburg. I have never been to Petersburg so this was a new adventure. The historic downtown was amazing! All the historic buildings and store fronts were just what I was looking for. I started at one end of the street and headed down to the other end. All the stores were within walking distance.
The first two places I stopped didn’t have what I was looking for. There was one set that I think I might go back to get later though. The next place I stopped was the best stop of the day. This store is call “The Oaks Antiques”. It is a huge Antique Mall! I walked through and made notes of what I was interested in. It took me about an hour to see everything. I decided to look at the other location and then come back for what I wanted so I didn’t have to carry the bags with me.
I headed down to two more antique stores. The last one was called “Uber Art“. Here I found the nicest bed! I’m not sure if we can use it, but we are going to have to look at it closer. But while I was there, I met a couple that were also bed and breakfast owners. Perita and Mitchell own “The Destiny Inn B&B” in Petersburg. Perita and I started talking and we found out that we shared allot of the same history. Both she and Mitchell had been in the military like Brett and I. We both love cooking and meeting new people. We must have stood there for twenty minutes comparing notes and asking questions. I knew before she left we were going to have to make a point to stay with them soon.
I made me way back to The Oaks Antiques to pick up the items I wanted. I found two tea pots, three tea cups, two beaded pewter mint julep cups and four butter pats. There had been another tea pot that I wanted, but the price was just a little to high for my budget. When I got to the front, I asked if they would consider taking less. Sadly, they weren’t able to lower the price. As I waited for them to ring me up, of course I had to talk about our plantation. There was a gentleman waiting to be checked out who took an interest in our conversation. By the time we were done, he ask me to wait as he ran out to his car. He had something he thought I would be interested in. So I waited. When he returned, he told me that he did not have the item with him like he thought. It was an old map of a local plantation that was over 500 acres. I would have liked to see that!
Just after he had come back in to tell me, one of the mall booth owners came in. It turns out that I had purchased most of my items from his booth. We got to talking and the next thing I know I am back to his booth area. We walked around his booth as he showed me items that I might be interested in and things I needed to look for as I started furnishing the house. As we walked around, I found a fourth cup. Then we got back to the tea pot that I had wanted that was a little out of my budget. I pointed it out and told him that I really liked it. We moved to another area that I had seen a beautiful plate with gold details. It was way out of my price range, but to my surprise, he discounted it so I could consider it! Then he added the teapot I wanted! How could I resist! He also invited us to come back and he would bring us some more things to look at.
After I left the antique store, I decided to find “The Destiny Bed and Breakfast”. As I drove over, I was surprised at all the historic homes that were in Petersburg. I think I must have stopped a couple hundred of times to look and take pictures! These homes were just beautiful! Then I found “The Destiny”. What a beautiful home! I know now we have to come back.
As I was driving out of the historic district, Brett texted me asking where I was now. I called him and told him I was “lost” in the historic district. I wasn’t really lost, just lost in thought. I told him that we had to come back next weekend and stay and visit the other antique stores. After I got off, I called “The Destiny” and it looks like we are going to be heading back next Friday! I can’t wait to stay in this beautiful home and have a chance to really see Petersburg!
A productive trip. Nice that you made some nice finds. I like the bed, would really be a focus point for a room.
Believe it or not, the beds we have in mind are more dramatic then this one!
Petersburg looks stunning ~ and love your purchases especially the first teapot.
Hope Hurley got on OK 😉
Hurley is doing fine. Just an annual check up. We found out today that he is now considered a “senior” at eight years. But the vet says he is as health as a 3 or 4 year old. And he acts like one too! I loved the finds today too. Of course I think I say that about all my finds. 😉
I love that bed – makes me think I’ll really love the more dramatic ones you are planning! Petersburg looks really neat – love all those historic homes!
I can’t wait to show them to you! We are getting ready to post a new page for our drawing. I have put pictures of the style we are looking to us for those rooms! You’ll have to check it out!
Oh the tea-pots! And the houses were a feast for the eyes – lovely ppost thank you
Thank you! More to come next weekend since we are going to be heading back!
Sounds like a wonderful trip! I’ve never antiqued in Petersburg, but I have been in those shops on 460. If you’re up for a LONGER trip, you need to go to Packing House Antiques in Cambridge, Maryland. It’s a huge antique mall, and they had SO many cups and saucers. I thought about you! I think I even have a picture of the “cup and saucer booth” on my phone. If so, I’ll send it to you later today.
Sounds great! I’ll have to make a weekend trip out of that one! But I thought about you as I was driving back from Petersburg. I made a small detour to Bacon’s Castle just to see it once more! They were closed of course by the time I got there, but it was still just as grand!
Several decades ago I had a company in Texas called “Yesterday’s Treasures.” I specialized in restoring antique furniture. Went to a lot of antique auctions all along the Gulf Coast and saw a lot of wonderful stuff.
You know I have’t been to an auction yet. The booth dealer in Petersburg was telling me about one on Thursdays in Richmond. I think I might have to try it.
They can be a lot of fun. Just don’t make any unexpected hand gestures…………lol
What I am afraid of is finding something I don’t want someone else to have and bidding too much!
Some great finds and I really love that Pineapple tea pot! I am looking at a map as I type this – we are planning our vacation drive to Florida (from eastern Ontario) and are really considering a swing through Virginia! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Great! I would highly recommend it! I love the pineapple one too! That is the one I really wanted and he discounted for me! You are so welcome!
Great finds, beautiful china. Learning so much about historic Virginia. I really love the pineapple tea pot also. Gorgeous.
Thank you! I loved the pineapple too! It was the one that I wanted them to discount and the booth owner did later for me!
Petersburg is lovely! Thank you for the tour! Beautiful tea pots and cups, especially the first white tea pot.
Thank you! We are going to have more on Petersburg next weekend!
What a terrific day and some great finds! Thanks for posting so many great photos…I almost feel like I was along for the ride. 🙂
You are so welcome! But I have to stay you were with me! I think about what I am going to share when I take them!
I wish you had a “love” button, I love this photos! I love teapots and teacups but don’t have the room to collect them so I am enjoying your collection. All the photos was as if i was there…you have to let me know when you open…I see an anniversary trip coming up for my husband and me! You have great taste and a great sense of a bargain. Blessings – Patty
Patty, I love sharing these with you! When you come, we will have to pull them all down for you to look at and pick one to enjoy a tea with! I am really looking forward to meeting you!
Michelle
Great post and photos! I used to love going antique shopping with my mom when I was young. Your fun post brought back the excitement of it for me. :).
Oh, I am so glad! It is so much fun when it means something special to others too!
What is your latest tally count of cups and saucers and teapots? Are you now collecting or still gathering tea sets for your B&B? I am waiting to see your table and floor lamps and bed sets, too!
Funny you should ask this. As of today, we have finish finding the tea cups and saucer! YAY! I’m going to put up a post later with the final finds! We won’t be buy furniture just yet. We need to make sure we can get the permits we need. Then we can start that part.
Amazing photos which help us to experience your adventure; love it!
Thank you! I am so glad every one is really enjoying this journey with us!
i get so excited every time i see your posts pop up. i think it is because my interests and yours are so alike. you are able to do the things and show me the sights while i sit here and care for my brother. i love your blogging site, and if i ever get the chance to be alone for some time, i will be over!
Aw that is so cool! We are so glad that we are able to bring you along for now while you care for your brother! We hope someday you will be able to come and experience it for real! Until then, we will keep sharing the fun!
What a fun post! My, I do appreciate your scouting all of these places out for us—the shops and the towns and neighborhoods! Those houses are just beautiful. And the teapots and teacups so pretty, too!
Thank you! It has been our pleasant doing the scouting! I just hope we don’t run out of places to go before we open the house!
Thank you for sharing your adventures. It’s interesting and refreshing for one living here in the desert of the Hopis.
You are so welcome! I am so intrigued by your living there! I was looking at your blog but couldn’t find an “About you” page. Do you have one that I can read or can you give me a little of your history? I haven’t been out west too much so I am not as good with Western History as I am with Colonial History.
I guess I should do an About page on WordPress. . .until then (you can check out http://storytellingtheater.com to find out what I have done creatively). Out here in Hopi as an RN starting a new job as a school nurse. Also, if you are following my blog you’ll learn a lot about me.
I had to do an “About Us” page too after I started. It does help. Wow a nurse! That is such a noble profession! I will try and do some more reading from your blog over the next days. Thing are getting a little busy so I am not able to read as much as I like.
What a beautiful part of the world, it’s what I dream America to be. I went to New York for the art but I think a trip to Virginia would be a trip for the heart. If only that plane ride wasn’t so damn long. Cheers Sue
Aw that is the coolest comment about Virginia I have heard! Thank you! I wish you could come see us! But never say never! It could happen! I believe in possibilities.
Hi! This is James and Robyn from The Old Country Store Antiques. We enjoyed talking to you yesterday. Thank you so much for the kind words…we look forward to reading your updates and the progress of the B&B. We definitely want to visit when everything is up and running! Look forward to seeing you again soon!
Hi! I am so glad you signed on! I have had several comments on your tea pot! We might be heading down 460 this weekend to heading back to Petersburg! I will see if we can stop by either on the way there or on the way back! Thank you for a great shopping experience and we are so glad you have joined us for the journey!
What a wonderfully rich, full account, with lovely photos!
Thank you! We still have so much more to share!
Thanks for sharing your trip. It’s been several years since I have been antique shopping; I’m starting to feel the itch. 🙂
You are so welcome! I know what you mean by the itch! I missed one weekend and I think it was killing me wanting to get out and look!
Sounds like a great day Michelle! I hope you take a lot of pictures during your stay this weekend. Do you have an email address?
Hey! I love Old Towne Petersburg, especially The Oak! I worked there for nearly 6 years and used to be a dealer there as well. Your favorite vendor was my landlord at my first apartment. He helped me source all the furniture. Glad to read your post and see all the goodies you found. I’ve had the privileged to see inside of many of the homes you featured! They are fabulous!
Wow! I am jealous! Petersburg is such an unrated location! It really does have some great places to see!
